Our Fight to Protect Voters Is Working

At Common Cause, we’ve long recognized that state-level voting rules can have a profound impact on whose voices are heard in our elections. While these rules often fly under the radar, their influence on democracy is immense. That’s why we’ve invested years of work into strengthening democracy at the state level, ensuring fair access to the ballot box for all.

And today, we’re excited to share that our efforts are paying off. In just the last few weeks, we’ve celebrated several major wins that push back against election deniers and extremist politicians who threaten our democratic process.

Fighting Illegal Voter Purges in Georgia
In Georgia, we’ve taken legal action to block an attempt to purge more than 5,000 voters from the rolls—an illegal move that would have disenfranchised thousands. With our voting rights partners, we are ensuring that every eligible Georgian can cast their ballot without obstruction or fear.

Stopping Electoral College Manipulation in Nebraska
In Nebraska, special interests attempted a last-minute move to rig the Electoral College, aiming to switch the state to a winner-takes-all system in order to gain a partisan advantage. But our members rallied quickly. Common Cause Nebraska mobilized dozens of people to fight back and stop this scheme, ensuring that every vote counts in the upcoming election.

Winning Fair Maps in Indiana
Indiana saw a historic victory for fair representation when we successfully sued the City of Anderson and its county election board. After 40 years of refusing to redraw its city council districts despite population shifts, the city is finally drawing fair districts. This legal win guarantees voters the representation they deserve.

Advancing Voting Rights in Michigan
In Michigan, months of advocacy led to the passage of the Michigan Voting Rights Act in the State Senate. This landmark legislation is a major step forward in protecting voters’ rights. With only a few more hurdles to clear in the House, we’re committed to ensuring that all Michigan voters have equal access to the ballot box without fear of discrimination.

These victories are just a glimpse of what we can accomplish when we work together. Across the country, Common Cause is fighting to stop attacks on our democratic rights and to pass laws that protect and expand voting access.

As we prepare for what many are calling the most pivotal election of our time, we’re not slowing down. Our Election Protection program is growing rapidly, with volunteers from all over the country stepping up to ensure that every eligible voter can make their voice heard.

Together, we are standing strong against voter suppression and defending democracy—one state, one vote, one win at a time.
