Reuters: Who funds your local sheriff? Report raises new campaign finance questions

Keshia Morris Desir, mass incarceration project manager at Common Cause, told me thatย The Paid Jailerย report, which was released in January, โ€œtries to shine a light on a blind spot in efforts toward criminal justice reform.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re really trying to call attention to this issue because we usually only think about the police department when we talk about law enforcement reform, even though sheriffs are actually elected officials,โ€ Desir said.
Desir, at Common Cause, told me campaign finance reporting systems...

Public News Service: Ohio Lawmakers Push to Join Convention of States

Viki Harrison, director of state operations for Common Cause, said fringe groups from both sides of the aisle have called for a convention of states over the years, but her organization is opposed, noting the gathering could easily be influenced by powerful special interests.

"Who's going to choose who goes to the convention?" Harrison wondered. "We already see how outside special-interest groups, big-money donors, have so much influence in elections, so why would we think this would be any different?"

VICE News: An Election Police Force Is an Absolutely Terrible Idea

โ€œThe governor of Florida does not have control over all Florida police departments or the FBI. And by proposing this integrity unit, it seems like thatโ€™s what he wants: personal, political goon squad,โ€ said Sylvia Albert, director of voting and elections for Common Cause.

โ€œA police force under the authority of a political individual becomes a political army. Thatโ€™s similar to, I donโ€™t know, Russia?โ€ Albert said. โ€œIn America, we have separation of powers. We have politicians, we have police, we have the judiciary....

Dallas Morning News: Who donated to embattled Texas AG Ken Paxtonโ€™s campaign? Many donors remain a mystery

โ€œTexas has the weakest, most corruption-prone campaign finance system in the country,โ€ said Anthony Gutierrez, executive director of Common Cause Texas. โ€œIt is striking that our top law enforcement official canโ€™t manage to meet our extremely low disclosure requirements.โ€

Itโ€™s important for voters to know who is donating to a candidate, Gutierrez said, especially in a state where thereโ€™s no cap on contributions.

โ€œWe really canโ€™t make decisions about whether a public official is acting in our best...

The New Republic: Hope and Despair on Capitol Hill as Democratsโ€™ Voting Reforms Die by Republican Filibuster (and Manchinema)

โ€œWeโ€™re not going to give up and take our marbles and go home. Weโ€™re going to continue to fight, as we are also fighting at the state level,โ€ said Karen Hobert Flynn, the president of Common Cause. She said that Common Cause would work to educate voters about their rights, recruiting poll monitors, and support groups that are bringing forward litigation. โ€œThere are going to be a lot of fronts to fight this battle at the state level, but in many ways itโ€™s going to be a whack-a-mole,โ€ Flynn said.

San Antonio Express-News: Texas Secretary of State scrambles to address mail ballot application problems as deadline looms

The issue has drawn the ire of voting rights groups like Common Cause and the League of Women Voters who have for years pushed the state to move to allow online voter registration. Texas is one of eight states that does not offer it. The League depends on the state's paper copies to provide new citizens with the forms in their welcome packets at naturalization ... ceremonies.

"This is a problem that's easily solvable," said Common Cause executive director Anthony Gutierrez. "We ask that the state immediately take steps to fix...

Texas Public Radio: Texas election officials blame new voting law for rise in rejected mail-in ballot applications

โ€œAs things stand now, about half of those voters are being blocked from having their voices heard,โ€ Stephanie Gomez, the associate director at Common Cause Texas,ย said in a statement. โ€œIf this isnโ€™t fixed, this single provision of SB 1 could block up to a half-million Texans from voting by mail this year.โ€

โ€œIn the meantime, we urge all Texans to be your own advocates for your freedom to vote,โ€ added Gomez. โ€œWhile the politicians in charge are determined to make it as hard as possible to vote, Common Cause Texas...

New York Times: Republican Gerrymander of North Carolina Maps Is Upheld in Court

โ€œThe evidence clearly showed that Republican legislative leaders brazenly ignored legal requirements designed to protect voting rights for Black North Carolinians,โ€ the groupโ€™s executive director, Bob Phillips, said in a statement. โ€œIf allowed to stand, these extreme gerrymanders would cause profound and lasting harm to the people of our state.โ€

Associated Press: New lawsuit challenges 3 Georgia congressional district maps

ATLANTA (AP) โ€” Voting rights groups and individual voters on Friday filed a federal lawsuit that says the new map for three Georgia congressional districts violate the Constitution and weaken the power of voters of color.

It challenges the 6th, 13th and 14th congressional districts. The Southern Poverty Law Center filed the lawsuit on behalf of Common Cause, the League of Women Voters of Georgia and individual voters.

Dallas Morning News: Was Jan. 6 an insurrection? Label fight rages a year after mob attacked U.S. Capitol

โ€œThe insurrection was a violent affront to free and fair elections and the orderly transition of power,โ€ said Karen Hobart Flynn, president of the liberal group Common Cause.

โ€œJanuary 6th interrupted two centuries of the peaceful transfer of power. It was staged by a domestic enemy fueled by the lies fed by the former president, some Republican politicians, and their allies who tried to subvert a bedrock democratic principle: that voters decide elections,โ€ she said.
