It’s National Voter Registration Day: Remember to Check Your Registration

In celebration of National Voter Registration Day, California Common Cause is asking all likely voters in California to use its new tool to verify that they are registered to vote at their current address.

LOS ANGELES, Tuesday, September 25, 2018 – In celebration of National Voter Registration Day, California Common Cause is asking all likely voters in California to use its new tool to verify that they are registered to vote at their current address.

Likely voters across California and in any state in the U.S. can visit commoncause.org/verify to verify that they are registered to vote at their current address. It takes about 30 seconds for a user to enter their name and address and confirm their voter registration. If the name and address do not match the registration database, Common Cause redirects users to the appropriate government site to update their information.

Common Cause launched this tool to ensure that voters can make their voices heard at the ballot box. In some states and jurisdictions, leaders have aggressively purged voters from the rolls, while others’ registration authorities have experienced errors. In California, for instance, the Department of Motor Vehicles has reported processing errors with up to 23,000 DMV customers’ records since launching the Motor Voter program in April.

“With this year’s midterm elections just six weeks away, voters can take action right now to ensure they are registered to vote,” said Kathay Feng, executive director of California Common Cause.

California residents have until Oct. 22 to register or update their registration. If residents miss the deadline, they can use a new Same Day Registration system, also known as Conditional Voter Registration, to make their vote count. Between Oct. 23 and Nov. 6, residents can visit a Same Day Registration site to register (or update their registration) and vote at the same time. A list of Same Day Registration sites and their dates/hours of operation will be published on the Secretary of State’s website or voters can contact their county elections office.
