Angelenos Overwhelmingly Approve Redistricting Reform for LA
Over 70% of Los Angeles voters agree — it’s time for fair maps and a more representative City Hall
Los Angeles — As 2024 election results are counted and in the process of certification, one thing is clear: Los Angeles voters overwhelmingly support independent redistricting, resulting in landslide wins for Measures DD & LL.
Measures DD & LL put important decision-making power about the future of LA communities back in the hands of Angelenos, and out of the hands of power-hungry politicians, by creating independent redistricting commissions for LA City Council and LAUSD respectively.
Angelenos for Fair Maps — Yes on Measures DD & LL! was supported by a coalition of civic engagement and democracy reform organizations, including AAPI Equity Alliance, ACLU Southern California, Alliance for a Better Community, California Common Cause, Catalyst California, Fair Rep LA, LA Forward Institute, and the League of Women Voters Greater Los Angeles.
Statement from Angelenos for Fair Maps:
For too long, redistricting has been abused by those in power at City Hall to disempower our communities for their own political gain. With the overwhelming approval of Measures DD & LL, Angelenos have made their voices loud and clear: the people have the right to determine the future of our city and our communities — not politicians.
In the wake of the leaked tapes that revealed racist comments made by Los Angeles city leaders and councilmembers as they gerrymandered city council districts, our coalition took decisive action. Angelenos for Fair Maps focused on educating and engaging communities of color and disenfranchised communities to ensure that everyone has a voice not only in this reform vote, but in the future independent redistricting processes.
“Los Angeles has a dismaying track record of scandal and corruption,” said Russia Chavis Cardenas, the voting rights and redistricting program manager for California Common Cause. “These election results begin to turn the city back in the right direction. And they show that democracy can make major progress if we focus on the state and local levels.”
No matter their zip code, background, or income level, all Angelenos deserve fair, transparent, representative leadership. Measures DD & LL will help ensure this for decades to come, putting an end to undemocratic redistricting practices in the City.
Angelenos for Fair Maps looks forward to the implementation of independent redistricting and to continuing to work with the City to ensure an equitable, representative Los Angeles for all.
