Thanks to Senator Murkowski for recognizing that democracy is not a partisan issue. Common Cause and especially our 2,000 members and supporters in Alaska applaud her efforts to ensure that the voting rights of thousands of Alaskans who have faced discrimination at the polling place are protected.

As America marks the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, Congress and the Obama administration have a shared responsibility to pass new legislation renewing our nation’s commitment to guaranteeing every citizen easy access to the ballot.

Voting Rights Act in 2013 moved this week into a federal courtroom in North Carolina.

This past weekend, I joined hundreds of activists from the NAACP, Common Cause, and other organizations in Georgia for the Journey For Justice, a march from Selma to Washington D.C. to make good on our democracy's fundamental promise of liberty and justice for every American.
