On the Brink of a Constitutional Crisis

All but unnoticed by the public and press, balanced budget activists and an assortment of big money interests are close to triggering a political and governmental crisis in the form of a new constitutional convention, Common Cause argues in a report released today. “The Dangerous Path. Big Money’s Plan to Shred the Constitution,” examines a decades-old campaign on behalf of a convention under Article V of the Constitution. The unprecedented assembly could re-write the 238-year old Constitution, imperiling civil rights and the system of checks and balances at the heart of the nation’s charter, the report warns.

"Steve Beshear is ending his service as governor with a service to democracy. His executive order restoring the voting rights of tens of thousands of Kentuckians who have completed their sentences for non-violent offenses will be welcomed by every fair-minded citizen and will encourage ex-offenders to take on the responsibilities of good citizenship.

Connecticut Democrats Buck Reform Trend, Propose Suspending Clean Elections in 2016

Proving that neither major party is pure when it comes to reducing the influence of money in politics, leaders of the Connecticut Democratic Party today proposed “suspending” that state’s model Clean Elections law in which 74 percent of candidates running for office participated during the 2014 election. The proposed suspension for 2016 comes on the heels of law suits filed by the Connecticut State Democratic Party that also seeks to undermine the landmark legislation.
