3 Major Wins in Connecticut This Legislative Session

The 2023 legislative session in Connecticut was one for the books.

The 2023 legislative session in Connecticut was one for the books. Common Cause in Connecticut is proud to see the passage of three major legislative victories that will make our elections more accessible, equitable, and fair.

  1. The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of Connecticut, also known as the CTVRA, was signed into law on June 12, 2023. The new law will provide improved language assistance for voters who don’t speak English, create strong protections against voter intimidation, and give voters the tools to fight back against politically motivated redistricting practices. More information on what this bill will accomplish is available here.
  2. Early voting was signed into law on June 7, 2023. Starting in 2024, Connecticut voters will be able to vote up to 14 days early for general elections, 7 days early for most primaries, and 4 days early for presidential primaries and special elections.
  3. A measure that will double public financing grants for gubernatorial candidates as part of the Citizens’ Election Program was included as part of a last-minute omnibus bill. We have been advocating for this for a number of years. Though this has not been signed into law yet, when it is signed, it will strengthen the Citizens’ Election Fund and make campaigning for office more accessible to all Connecticut residents — not just the wealthiest among us.
