California Common Cause is seeking an intern to assist with and learn about our policy work around Voting Rights and Elections. Communications Intern (California)

Democracy Intern (Colorado)

Standort: Remote within Colorado

Start Date: Monday, September 16th

Reports to: Programs & Engagement Manager, CO

Details: This is a part-time internship (20 hours/pay period), starting Monday, September 16th and ending Saturday, November 30th

Essential functions: 

Colorado Common Cause is seeking a paid Democracy Intern to assist with voter protection activities, policy research, and grassroots engagement. The Democracy Intern will report to Colorado Common Cause’s Programs & Engagement Manager. Individuals with keen interest in government affairs and the legislative process, a can-do attitude, and a commitment to a fair and transparent democracy are highly encouraged to apply.

Skills you will build and work you will be involved in

The intern will:

  • Support our 2024 voter protection field program, which may include supporting volunteers virtually and in person.
  • Conduct policy research in anticipation of the 2025 legislative session.
  • Assist in coordinating member outreach, including events, emails, and social media
  • Build skills in effective research and external outreach; learn about our key priorities to create a more accountable government in Colorado
  • Occasionally staff in-person events, including our September 25th fundraiser and tabling opportunities during the voting period (late October through Election Day). At these events, have direct conversations with Coloradans about our work with a goal of driving them to action on our campaigns.

Volunteer and Membership Engagement Intern (Indiana)

Standort: This position is hybrid.

Start Date: September 16th-November 30th, 2024

Reports to: Indiana Executive Director

Details: This is a part-time internship working 20 hours per pay period starting Monday, September 16th and ending Friday, November 29th. The intern will need to have reliable access to Wi-Fi and a computer, and the intern must be located in Indiana for the duration of the internship. Indianapolis or Central Indiana location is preferred.

Essential functions: 

Common Cause Indiana is seeking a Volunteer and Membership Engagement Intern. This is an exciting opportunity on the front lines of democracy to learn about and assist with volunteer management, social media management, building engaging voting rights content, and organizing community trainings. This is a chance to learn and grow at a non-partisan grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy.

HBCU Democracy Fellowship (Maryland or North Carolina)

The Common Cause Democracy fellowship aims to address the voter suppression that young people of color experience by working with Minority Serving Institutions and the communities around those campuses. This academic year we are hosting HBCU Democracy fellows in North Carolina and Maryland and Democracy Fellows from campuses across Texas.

Democracy Fellows will work closely with Common Cause state staff and national youth programs staff to boost civic engagement and promote the value of becoming lifelong participants in democracy on their campus.

All applicants must attend  a Maryland or North Carolina HBCU.

Fall Semester:

In the fall semester, Democracy Fellows will focus on increasing student turnout by:

  • creatively communicating with peers about the importance of students voting and having a voice in decisions affecting their everyday lives, their futures, and our HBCUs.
  • disseminating information about the voting processes (voter registration, requesting absentee ballots, accessing polling locations, voting early, etc).
  • connecting with students on issue areas of student interest and Common Cause policy platforms;
  • attending community events to learn about early voting, election protocol, and what will be expected during the general election.
  • recruiting volunteers for GOTV roles (phonebankers bankers, canvassers, poll monitors, etc.)
  • Participate in all GOTV activities (phonebanks, canvasses, poll monitoring, voter registration drives, board of election engagement, etc.)

Spring Semester:

In the spring semester, Democracy Fellows will focus on building relationships and educating their peers on ways to influence change by:

  • hosting events and discussion on topics that highlight the importance of civic engagement beyond voting.
  • Participate in state advocacy days
  • disseminate information on bills that will have a direct impact on students
  • Write a blog or OpEd on a topic of interest.

This is a ten hour minimum per week commitment for the semester with the opportunity to continue for up to two additional semesters. Selected Democracy Fellows will receive $1000 per semester divided into monthly payments..

Opportunities

  • Build relationships with student leaders on your campus, in your state, and across the country;
  • Participate in leadership and organizing trainings to prepare you for future work in politics, law, advocacy, public relations, and more;
  • Develop a mentoring relationship with Common Cause’s staff and connections to Common Cause’s community of partners.

Responsibilities 

  • Recruit and cultivate volunteers
  • Manage and participate in voter registration and community outreach
  • Track contacts and enter information into data form
  • Participate in statewide and national Democracy Fellow trainings and learning events (beginning of each semester, monthly conference calls, and etc.)
  • Attend weekly or biweekly meetings with Common Cause staff and other campus Democracy Fellows to coordinate activities
  • Establish and maintain relationships with community and campus partners
  • Support and advance the Common Cause Student Action Alliance’s  mission
  • Increase Common Cause Student Action Alliance’s social media presence (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram)
  • Disseminate information about the voting processes by making class announcements, organizing residence hall dialogues, tabling, and attending partner events
  • Work closely with Common Cause staff to develop individual goals that are in alignment with student’s strengths and interests.

Common Cause (RI) is seeking an Outreach and Engagement Intern to work on issues related to voting and elections, democracy reform, civic education, and advocacy. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has a commitment to a fair and transparent democracy, and who is interested in learning more about government affairs and the legislative process in Rhode Island. This intern will create engaging social media content, organize and attend community events, recruit and train volunteers, and work in collaborative spaces with various coalition partners. This is a chance to learn and develop new skills at a non-partisan grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy.

Skills you will build and work you will be involved in:

  • Assist staff with a range of advocacy, programming, and communications activities, including:
  • Recruiting and training Election Protection volunteers for the General Election in November.
  • Supporting other nonpartisan election-related efforts, such as voter registration, voter education, GOTV (get out the vote) activities, National Voter Education Week, and/or poll worker recruitment.
  • Mobilizing activists and community members in support of our policy priorities, using digital and in-person organizing tools and techniques.
  • Creating website, newsletter, and social media content, including blog posts, graphics, one-pagers, training materials, videos, or other content types.
  • Organizing and promoting in-person, hybrid, and virtual events such as webinars, rallies, trainings, press conferences, community presentations, and/or educational sessions.

Common Cause Nebraska is seeking an Advocacy Intern. This is an exciting opportunity at the intersection of advocacy and communications. This intern will create engaging social media content, assist with grassroots activities, and work in collaborative spaces with various coalition partners. This is a chance to learn and grow at a non-partisan grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy.

Research and Advocacy Intern (New York)

Common Cause (NY) is seeking an Research and Advocacy Intern. This is an exciting opportunity at the intersection of advocacy and education. This intern will create engaging social media content, assist with grassroots activities, and work in collaborative spaces with various coalition partners. This is a chance to learn and grow at a non-partisan grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy.

Skills you will build and work you will be involved in

  • Assist in educating and engaging voters so they are informed about the 2024 elections and NY and NYC ballot measures. This includes developing educational materials and social media materials, working with local organizations to provide educational support, and/or mobilizing our members;
  • Assist with research, social media, and other written outreach particularly around NY and NYC ballot measures;
  • Assist in organizing and promoting events including virtual townhalls, policy forums and rallies.

Qualifications

You will be a good fit for this internship if you have:

  • A passion for learning about elections and government affairs
  • A desire and an ability to work in a non-partisan manner
  • A willingness to build your organizational skills and attention to detail
  • A willingness to build your writing and listening skills
  • A willingness to learn new skills

Compensation: $1,750 for the 11 weeks paid in 5 equal twice monthly payments on the 15th and last day of the month.

Organizing Intern (New York)

Common Cause (NY) is seeking an Organizing Intern. This is an exciting opportunity to help New York voters during the 2024 Election. This intern will create engaging social media content, assist with grassroots activities, and work in collaborative spaces with various members of the team. This is a chance to learn and grow at a non-partisan grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy.

Skills you will build and work you will be involved in

  • Assist in educating and engaging voters so they are informed about the 2024 elections and any changes to the voting process. This includes developing educational materials and social media materials, working with local organizations to provide elections support, and/or mobilizing our members;
  • Support election protection efforts to recruit, train and manage volunteers across the state. This includes supporting local election protection partners which may include leading a volunteer team of non-partisan poll monitors;
  • Assist in organizing and promoting events including virtual townhalls, policy forums and rallies.

Qualifications

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who has a commitment to a fair and transparent democracy, and who is interested in learning more about voting and elections.

  • Assisting in election protection organizing for elections

  • Developing voting rights messaging and content for public education

National Digital Campaigns Intern

Reports to: Digital Campaigns Manager

Details: This is a paid, part-time internship (20 hours per pay period), starting September 16th and ending November 15th

Essential functions: Common Cause is seeking a Digital Campaigns Intern. The intern will work at the intersection of democracy and digital campaigning. This is an exciting opportunity to gain exposure to mass email and SMS analytics, draft content, and assist in improving the existing digital program in a non-partisan grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy.

Skills you will build and work you will be involved in:

– Drafting email, web, and/or SMS content

– Track and analyze data then make strategic recommendations based on findings

– Brainstorm and implement A/B tests

– Researching up-and-coming digital advocacy tactics and presenting them to the Digital Campaigns Manager

– Digital production in our eCRM, ActionNetwork

Qualifications

You will be a good fit for this internship if you have:

  • A passion for learning about elections, government affairs, and the legislative process
  • A willingness to build your organizational skills and attention to detail
