Gruppen fordern Änderungen bei der Volkszählung, um die Gefängnisbevölkerung für die Neugliederung der Wahlkreise genau zu erfassen

Heute forderten Common Cause und die Prison Policy Initiative das US Census Bureau auf, die Art und Weise zu ändern, wie es die Gefängnisbevölkerung alle zehn Jahre zählt. Der Einsatz von Differential Privacy durch das Bureau, also die absichtliche Einfügung ungenauer Informationen in die Bevölkerungsdaten, führt zu unnötigen Fehlzählungen in den Daten, die von staatlichen und lokalen Behörden zur Neugliederung der Wahlkreise verwendet werden. Today, Common Cause Indiana filed a federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of a state law that strips voters of their right to petition state courts to extend polling-place hours. Common Cause Indiana v. Lawson was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. Common Cause Indiana is being represented in the case by Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, the law firm of Eimer Stahl LLP and the national Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

While voting on legislation for which their companies may benefit may not be illegal, it does appear to be a conflict of interest, said Aaron Scherb, a spokesman for Common Cause, a Washington, D.C.-based nonpartisan government watchdog.

“Unfortunately, members of Congress frequently vote on bills in which they can personally benefit, and in nearly all cases it’s not illegal, although it certainly looks bad and smells bad,” Scherb said. “We think it certainly should be illegal.”
