Delawareans to Mark January 6th Anniversary with Night Vigil
Local event, hosted by grassroots organizations, will be one of 200+ nationwide
On the evening of January 6, 2022, Delawareans will gather in Sussex County to commemorate the anniversary of the attack on our nation’s Capitol while Congress was counting electoral college votes. The “Remembrance and Vigil” will also call for action to strengthen and protect our country’s democracy.
The outdoor event will start at 5pm, on the grounds of the Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware (30486 Lewes Georgetown Highway, Lewes, DE 19958), which is sponsoring the vigil. The event is co-sponsored by Common Cause Delaware, the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice, the League of Women Voters of Sussex County Delaware, Delaware Working Families Party, and Sierra Club Delaware Chapter.
“Last January 6th, we saw an unprecedented attack on our country’s tradition of peaceful transfer of power,” said Common Cause Executive Director Claire Snyder-Hall. “We cannot – must not – forget what happened or be complacent about what it was intended to do.”
“But we also need to focus on the fact that our democracy can be resilient,” Snyder-Hall said. “Throughout the country, there are hundreds of thousands of people working to preserve and protect our ‘government by the people’ – fighting back against anti-voter laws, stepping up to serve as elections officials, and working to ensure that Congress passes pro-voter legislation despite special-interest abuse of Senate rules.”
Delaware’s Remembrance and Vigil is one of more than 200 events that will be hosted by local organizations across the country on January 6, 2022.
