Civil Rights Groups Issue Notice Letter to Florida State Election Officials to Ensure Displaced Voters Have Access to the Ballot Ahead of Midterm Elections

The petition for writ of quo warranto against Governor Rick Scott is hereby granted.

"The petition for writ of quo warranto against Governor Rick Scott is hereby granted. The governor who is elected in the November 2018 general election has the sole authority to fill the vacancies that will be created by the mandatory retirement of Justices Barbara J. Pariente, R. Fred Lewis, and Peggy A. Quince, provided the justices do not leave prior to the expiration of their terms at midnight between January 7 and January 8, 2019, and provided that the governor takes office immediately upon the beginning of his term."

As Hurricane Michael and Voter Registration Deadline Loomed, Democracy Advocates Sued to Extend Registration Deadline

As Hurricane Michael barreled toward Florida’s panhandle region and voters were experiencing intermittent problems with the state’s online voting registration, Common Cause Florida, New Florida Majority Education Fund and Mi Familia Vota Education Fund were plaintiffs in a complaint for emergency injunctive and declaratory relief.

Gov. Scott Should Help Ensure a Fair and Accurate Census Count

Today, 31 national and local nonprofit organizations sent Governor Rick Scott a letter urging the state of Florida participate in the Local Update Census Address program in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau. This program aims at connecting officials in state, local and tribal council governments to the U.S. Census Bureau to ensure every person is counted in the 2020 census.

Municipal Elections in Ft. Myers and Cape Coral Postponed Due to Impact of Hurricane Irma on Lee County Voters

Governor Rick Scott issued an Executive Order on September 15, 2017, postponing municipal elections in Ft. Myers and Cape Coral to October 3, 2017, following an appeal by Common Cause Florida, State Voices Florida, the League of Women Voters Florida and the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law to delay these elections because of the devastating impact of Hurricane Irma on Lee County voters.
