Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA) is one of two House members elected by their peers to represent a historic freshman class, one in which many ran on promises to enact wide-ranging reforms. She cites a “complete lack of trust by our citizens in our government and in our democracy” and asks the panel whether greater transparency would aid in restoring that trust. Most of the witnesses agree, with Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) Director Walter Shaub stating that transparency “is probably the most important tool to assure the American people that their leaders are acting in their interest.”
