Arizona Republic Backs Independent Redistricting Commission in Editorial
Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to hear a challenge to the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission, the Arizona Republic published an editorial supporting the commission. The Republic editorial states: “Voters acted legislatively when they created the commission in a 2000 initiative. Other states have done the same, recognizing that leaving redistricting in the hands of legislatures often results in gerrymandered maps intended to entrench the majority party.”
The paper’s editorial board added that allowing the legislature to gerrymander districts “does not serve democracy, because it makes lawmakers less and less accountable to anyone but a core constituency.” Read the full editorial.
