5 Ways Common Cause Defended Democracy in the First Trump Administration
Article
Project 2025 is a direct threat to reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ equality, and equity initiatives.
Just like the Supreme Court took away our freedom to decide for ourselves whether and when to have kids, Project 2025 includes plans to ban abortion care and further undermine our reproductive rights.
Project 2025 would block access to abortion by making it impossible to mail abortion pills and medical supplies through the Comstock Act, an antiquated 1873 anti-obscenity law. This would effectively ban abortion in all 50 states—with or without the support of Congress and the courts.
Project 2025 would impose personhood language and policies that propagate the belief that life begins at conception into our laws. This so-called “personhood” language could ban not only abortion but also some forms of birth control and assisted fertility treatments like IVF.
Project 2025 would deny people access to life-saving emergency abortion and miscarriage care. Project 2025 calls for the Department of Health and Human Services to dismantle the abortion protections provided under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), a federal policy that outlines requirements for emergency departments that receive Medicare funds. We’ve already seen patients die because they weren’t able to access emergency abortion care. This would make matters worse.
Project 2025 includes a multitude of approaches designed to strip away our reproductive freedom, increase stigma around sexual and reproductive health, and even undermine access to contraception. You can learn more from Guttmacher here.
Project 2025 includes extensive plans to strip away LGBTQ+ rights and freedoms.
Project 2025 aims to outlaw being transgender. Project 2025 equates the act of being transgender, or “transgender ideology,” to pornography and declares that it should be outlawed. It aims to cut federal funding for gender-affirming care for children and adults. The plan’s authors describe gender-affirming care for youth as a “social contagion.” It would reinstate the ban on transgender people serving in the military. Project 2025 would also bring discrimination into classrooms, prohibiting students from using names or pronouns that differ from those on their birth certificates.
Project 2025 would undermine marriage equality and reinforce a narrow right-wing Christian view of families. The plan would redirect federal funds to support a “biblically based” definition of family. It calls for replacing policies related to LGBTQ+ equity with those that “support the formation of stable, married, nuclear families.” It would protect adoption and foster care services that refuse to work with LGBTQ+ married couples. It states children should be raised by their “biological” fathers and mothers.
Project 2025 would facilitate discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community by dismantling anti-discrimination protections by removing terms such as “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” from federal laws, allowing for legal discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals. It also seeks to restrict the Supreme Court’s decision in Bostock vs. Clayton County, which extended workplace protections to LGBTQ+ employees.
In addition to encouraging a culture of discrimination in the United States, Project 2025 would also end the Department of State’s LGBTQ equality initiatives in Africa and fundamentally alter American diplomacy in favor of anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ+ agendas.
Project 2025 aims to dismantle all of the progress we have seen with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives (DEI) since they gained momentum in 2020. Project 2025’s authors believe there has been a “DEI Revolution” at the Department of Labor and want to reverse it.
Project 2025 wants to end DEI initiatives. The plan urges the next president to issue executive orders prohibiting the federal government from paying for any critical race theory training and prohibiting racial classification and quotas. They also want the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to stop collecting employment data based on race and ethnicity.
The threats to our civil liberties are just part of the plan – Project 2025 aims to let the next Republican president rule over us instead of representing us. Voters deserve to know.
