The blatant violations of the law that Common Cause outlined dans notre plaintes to the Department of Justice concerning hush money payments to Stormy Daniels are among those that Cohen pleaded guilty to today. Cohen’s guilty plea directly implicates President Trump in related campaign finance violations detailed in Common Cause complaints.
Michael Cohen has learned that no American is above the law, even when his client is the President of the United States. Cohen’s actions on behalf of Donald Trump are reflective of a presidential administration, and campaign that preceded it, that has repeatedly conducted itself as if it is somehow above the law and ethical responsibilities.
It is important to remember that these violations were referred to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, whose investigation of the Russian attacks on the 2016 presidential election has led to a growing list of guilty pleas and indictments. It is essential that Congress stand behind this investigation – in the face of repeated threats against it by President Trump and his attorneys – until it is seen through to its conclusion. Americans expect and deserve representatives in congress who will put their country before their party and check any abuse of power by President Trump.
