YouGov Poll finds 49 percent support his removal, majorities oppose cuts

Washington – A new YouGov poll commissioned by Common Cause shows a near-majority of registered voters would support President Donald Trump firing Elon Musk today from his role as special advisor. Many expressed concerns over cuts to essential and popular federal government services.

Only 27 percent would not support Musk’s removal, and another 24 percent did not agree or disagree. Relatedly, a majority of those polled expressed concerns about Musk regarding the following actions:

  • A majority (64%) have at least some concerns that Elon Musk is cutting services to fund tax cuts for the wealthy (49% very concerned, 9% somewhat concerned, 6% a little concerned)
  • A majority (66%) are also concerned that Musk has access to personal data (48% very, 8% somewhat, 10% a little)
  • A majority (65%) are concerned that Musk’s companies have received billions in federal government contracts (45% very, 10% somewhat, 10% a little).

“It is clear, the voters are concerned about an unelected billionaire — Elon Musk — playing shadow president,” said Virginia Kase Solomón, President and CEO of Common Cause. “In fact, a near majority are ready for Elon to be fired. It’s time for the President and Congress to listen to the people, rein in DOGE, and fire Elon Musk.”

Other highlights from the poll:

  • Most voters want MORE people working in certain government agencies, not cuts, including 75% wanting the workforce to be “increased” or “stay the same” at the Department of Veterans Affairs, 68% for the National Park Service and 66% for the Social Security Administration.
  • A majority of Democrats (75%) think their party is not doing enough in Congress to oppose Musk and DOGE.
  • 61 percent of voters support guardrails on government funding to ensure the Trump administration spends money already appropriated by Congress.
  • Voters are worried Musk’s actions will do more harm than good – with a plurality (43%) thinking that Musk and DOGE will impact their life negatively, compared to only 37% who think there will be positive impacts.

Today’s poll release is the latest step in the “Fire Elon Musk” campaign, launched February 3, by Common Cause, the Southern Poverty Law Center Action Fund, End Citizens United, and other national advocacy organizations.

In the last few weeks, Common Cause, Washington’s leading watchdog group, has led the charge to demonstrate how Musk’s unprecedented influence in the White House is hurting the American people. More than 199,434 people nationally have signed onto Common Cause’s Fire Musk Petition, and a coalition of 10 diverse advocacy groups sent a letter to the White House demanding Musk’s removal.

Last week, Common Cause unveiled a new billboard in New York City’s Time Square calling for Musk’s removal. The electronic billboard first displayed the same night Musk’s SpaceX’s failed launch delayed 240 flights across the eastern seaboard. The company takes in billions of dollars every year, adding $613 billion in value since President Trump’s election.
