Fair Redistricting & Ending Gerrymandering

Every ten years, states redraw their electoral districts to reflect population changes. This process should be about making sure that everyone has a voice in our government, but in some states, it has become a partisan tool to undermine our democracy.

Drawing unfair maps — a process known as gerrymandering — denies communities the representation and resources they deserve. Our work to end gerrymandering includes efforts in the courts, on the ballot, and in the legislature to ensure a just and independent process.

Black voters in Georgia saw their voting power diminished in the last redistricting cycle. In response, Common Cause, the League of Women Voters of Georgia, and a group of Georgia voters filed a federal lawsuit challenging Georgia’s congressional map.

Leading up to the 2019 legislative session, Georgians urged the legislature through pledges to put democracy back in the hands of voters. This opportunity created the groundswell to mobilize masses for fairness in redistricting across our state.

2023 Elections Debrief

Every year is an election year in Georgia. Even without statewide elections, in 2023 there were several municipal races throughout the state, from mayoral contests to school board seats to changes to special-purpose local-option sales tax (SPLOST). While much smaller scale and with lower turnout, these off-year contests offer a glimpse of issues we can expect entering the 2024 election cycle.

ATLANTA — A three-judge panel for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia issued a stay in Common Cause v. Raffensperger, the federal court challenge of Georgia’s 2021 congressional voting map.
