MEDIA RELEASE: Tuesday is Georgia’s Statewide Primary Runoff

Tuesday, June 21, is Georgia’s primary run-off election.

ATLANTATomorrow, June 21 is the last day to vote in the 2022 Georgia primary runoff. Polls will be open statewide from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The anti-voter changes pushed through by Georgia’s state legislature has caused confusion for voters dealing with different voting locations and other significant changes.

Common Cause Georgia has received reports of inaccurate and outdated precinct and sample ballot information on the “My Voter Page” maintained by the Georgia Secretary of State’s office. As a result, we are urging people to contact their county election offices for the most up-to-date information. Contact and location information for their County Board of Registrars is available here.

Other important information about tomorrow’s election.

  • Voters must vote at their designated precinct. Out-of-precinct provisional ballots will no longer be counted unless cast after 5 p.m. and the voter signs a statement saying they could not make it to their home precinct in time. Out-of-precinct provisional ballots voted before 5 p.m. may not necessarily be counted. Voters who cast provisional ballots should call the Election Protection hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE for follow-up information.
  • Voters must provide photo ID at the polling place. More information is available at https://georgia.gov/vote-in-person-election-day
  • Voted absentee ballots must be received by 7 p.m. at the voter’s County Board of Registrars. Ballot drop boxes are not available on Election Day..
  • People can call the nonpartisan Election Protection hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE if they encounter problems voting or have questions.
  • High numbers of rejected absentee ballots have been recorded in some counties. Improperly signed ballots continue to be the most common reason given for rejection. Voters should check the status of their mail ballot and find other information on the state’s “My Voter Page” at https://mvp.sos.ga.gov/s/. Voters with rejected ballots should contact their county registrar to get more information and find options to cure the rejection or go to vote in-person at their polling place Tuesday.
  • Voters who need transportation can contact The People’s Agenda (https://thepeoplesagenda.org) or New Georgia Project (https://newgeorgiaproject.org/rides) for free rides to and from the polls.

Statement of Common Cause Georgia Executive Director Aunna Dennis

Last year’s anti-voter laws are making it more difficult for Georgians to exercise their fundamental voting rights.

We continue to be concerned that younger, Black, Latino and Asian voters won’t be fully represented in the primaries and November’s general election because of these unnecessary obstacles.

We all know that our ‘government by the people’ only works when we all vote. That’s why we need to push back against these unfair voting rules by showing up to vote in every election, including Tuesday’s primary runoff election.
