January 6th Committee Report Detailed How Coup Attempt Undermined Rights of Georgia Voters

Everyone in our nation has a right to participate in our democracy, and determine the future courses of our country and communities.

Statement from Aunna Dennis, Common Cause Georgia’s Executive Director

Everyone in our nation has a right to participate in our democracy, and determine the future courses of our country and communities.

But we came dangerously close to seeing those core beliefs tossed aside in the waning days of the Trump presidency, punctuated by the brazen attempt to overturn the valid and sacred choices made by Georgians in the 2020 presidential election.

Thanks to the tireless and exhaustive efforts by the January 6th committee, the American public now knows how extensive the plot to overturn the 2020 election was, and who fanned the flames that led to the violence in the U.S. Capitol that shook our nation to its core.

Nearly two years after the 2020 election, we in Georgia have yet to see true accountability for the ways former President Donald Trump and his supporters conspired to throw out our votes and disregard the choices made by Georgia voters in the 2020 election.

The call for criminal charges by the January 6th Committee is an important step forward. The special grand jury investigation in Fulton County is also looking at what Georgia laws were broken. To move forward, criminal charges must be pursued at the federal level and at the state level here in Georgia to give assurance that the will of We, the people, will always be respected and followed.
