Press Release
Hawaii State Legislature Will Hold Vote-By-Mail Informational Briefing
Starting with the upcoming 2020 elections, Hawaii is improving how citizens will cast their votes and participate in democracy. No longer will voters line up at traditional polling places to vote for their candidates on primary and election days. Instead paper ballots will be mailed to all registered voters. This makes vote-by-mail an easy way voters can select candidates from the comfort and security of their own homes.
Learn how the state and counties will implement statewide vote-by-mail and educate the public about this major change to our elections at this Wednesday’s informational briefing:
Hawaii State Capitol
Conference Room 016
Wednesday, November 13, 2019
2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Convened by the State Senate and House Judiciary Committees, this vote-by-mail informational briefing will include State and county speakers:
1. Scott Nago, Chief Election Officer, State of Hawaii
2. Jon Henricks, County Clerk, County of Hawaii
3. Josiah Nishita, County Clerk, County of Maui
4. Jade Fountain-Tanigawa, County Clerk, County of Kauai
5. Glen Takahashi, City Clerk, City & County of Honolulu
Common Cause Hawaii Executive Director Sandy Ma will also make comments at the informational briefing.
Statement by Sandy Ma, Executive Director of Common Cause Hawaii:
“Common Cause Hawaii is excited to learn about the steps the State and counties are taking to prepare the people of Hawaii for all vote-by-mail elections. Vote-by-mail improves Hawaii’s voting processes. We need to make sure the public is aware of the changes when voting in the important 2020 presidential elections. If properly implemented, vote-by-mail should mean more voter participation and ballot security.”
The statewide vote-by-mail law was passed by the 2019 Hawaii State Legislature and signed into law by Governor David Ige on June 25, 2019 as Act 136, Session Laws of Hawaii 2019.
