Camron Hurt Joins Common Cause Hawaii as Program Manager
HONOLULU – Common Cause Hawaii has hired a new leader to drive the organization’s pro-democracy work, naming Camron Hurt as its program manager this week. In this position, Hurt will focus on election protection and expanding access to the polls, increasing government transparency, and getting big money out of Hawaii politics.
“I am thrilled to be joining this team and bringing my expertise of the great state of Hawaii to Common Cause,” said Hurt. “Working with the nonpartisan organization that has been defending our democracy since before I was born is a dream come true. I look forward to championing government transparency by taking up the call for campaign finance reform, and expanding voting access for all Hawaii residents.”
Raised in Nashville, Tennessee, and a resident of Hawaii for eight years, Hurt leverages six years in higher education and nonprofit management and five years as a corporate and litigation paralegal. A policy expert and lifelong advocate, the core of his work has focused on uplifting the needs of marginalized groups and centering community-based solutions to systemic issues. Hurt has previously headed the Supported Decision-Making division and Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Advisory Committee with Disability Rights Tennessee.
“After this year’s legislative session, it’s clear that the islands are in need of a democracy watchdog now more than ever,” said Heather Ferguson, Director of State Operations for Common Cause. “We are elated to have Camron leading the way, ensuring that Hawaii has a transparent, accessible, and equitable democracy that works in the best interest of the people – not special interests or the ultra-wealthy.”
Based in Honolulu, Hurt is a proud graduate of Tuskegee University and Hawaii Pacific University. At Tuskegee, he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and went on to earn a master’s degree in diplomacy & military studies from Hawaii Pacific University. Hurt is a self-described policy nerd and an active leader in his community. When he’s not at work, he’s spending quality time with his son and coaching soccer and track at the Punahou School.
