Common Cause Releases Candidate “Democracy Survey 2024”

Common Cause today released current results of its “Democracy Survey 2024,” the fourth biennial candidate questionnaire it has conducted on democracy issues in the leadup to November elections. With over two weeks to go before Election Day, more than 200 candidates for state and federal office have responded regarding their commitment to defend and strengthen our democracy. Common Cause expects many more surveys to be completed in the coming days from the more than 2,000 candidates and 1,100 federal and state races tracked in the survey.

Respondents answered “yes” or “no” to several questions on topics from amplifying small donor contributions, to ending gerrymandering and allowing same-day voter registration and whether candidates would support the Freedom to Vote Act, John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, DISCLOSE Act, and other key democracy reforms. A number of House and Senate candidates in competitive races like Angela Alsobrooks (MD), Jacky Rosen (NV), Carl Marlinga (MI-10), and Neil Parrott (MD-06) are a sampling of folks who have completed the Democracy Survey candidate questionnaire so far.

“It is critically important that every American is aware of their candidates’ stance on safeguarding our democracy, curbing the influence of Big Money in our politics, and protecting voting rights,” said Common Cause president and CEO Virginia Kase Solomón. “Many of these commonsense reform proposals have been passed into law with strong bipartisan support in states across the country. And through this survey, we are asking for candidate commitments to take concrete steps to protect and strengthen our democracy.”

The release of the Democracy Survey 2024 comes after Common Cause published its 민주주의 점수표 last month, which provides data on every current member of Congress based on their votes for, or cosponsorship of, key democracy reform bills this Congress.

“We give voters the tools to get every candidate for Congress on the record about their willingness and commitment to defend our democracy,” said Aaron Scherb, Common Cause senior director of legislative affairs. “And after the election we will work  with voters to hold officials accountable to the promises they make in the Democracy Survey 2024 survey.
