Groups Urge Census Changes to Accurately Count Prison Populations For Redistricting

Today, Common Cause and the Prison Policy Initiative urged the U.S. Census Bureau to change how it counts prison populations each decade. The Bureau’s use of differential privacy, the intentional infusion of inaccurate information into population data, creates unnecessary miscounts in data used by state and local officials for redistricting. In a letter to Director Robert L. Santos and other senior officials, the groups emphasized that the populations of correctional facilities are already publicly available and that differential privacy is...

SCOTUS Rulings on Voting Rights & Nonprofit Disclosure Make Clear Congress Must Pass For the People Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act

Today’s Supreme Court rulings on voting rights and nonprofit financial disclosure make clear that there is no alternative but to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect our democracy. The high court struck another blow against voting rights today and also made it more difficult for states to monitor fundraising by “dark money” nonprofits. Now it falls to Congress to protect the freedom of every American to vote without being subject to intimidation or discrimination regardless of the color...

House Votes to Establish Select Committee to Investigate January 6th Insurrection

Americans deserve to know the full truth about the attack on our democracy January 6th at the U.S. Capitol when a violent, racist mob attempted to overturn the result of the 2020 election. The select committee established today by the U.S. House of Representatives will get to the bottom of what happened and the causes behind the attack that left fatalities and scores of seriously injured in its wake. The truth is vitally important to establish at a time when many – even some Members of Congress - are trying to whitewash the vicious attack by...

Washington Post: This law helped the Capitol riot happen. So why does nobody want to change it?

“Updating the Electoral Count Act would be a great addition to that bill,” said Aaron Scherb, the director of legislative affairs at Common Cause, a good-government group instrumental in pushing the For the People Act. “Because presidential elections only occur every four years, there's kind of a natural ebb and flow of what people pay attention to or what problems rise up.”

USA Today: 에릭 애덤스, 1위 투표 집계 이후 뉴욕 시장 선거에서 선두가 좁아졌다고 예상

Common Cause/New York

Common Cause Urges U.S. House Members to Support Select Committee to Investigate January 6th Insurrection

Common Cause is urging every member of the U.S. House of Representatives to vote “yes” on a resolution to create a select committee to investigate the attack January 6th on the United States Capitol by a violent mob attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The letter notes that Common Cause plans to key-vote final passage of H.Res. 503 to create the select committee to investigate the deadly insurrection in our next Democracy Scorecard, which we send to our 1.5 million members.

International Business Times: Manhattan DA Won’t Charge Trump, Organization Over ‘Hush Money’ Payments, Lawyer Says

“Trump masterminded this whole thing, and so far he’s walked. Everyone who carried out his dirty work here, Cohen and AMI, paid penalties and did prison time. It’s good news that the Federal Election Commission is holding the tabloid company AMI accountable for its illegal actions in the 2016 election,” Paul S. Ryan, Common Cause vice president for policy and litigation said in a statement following the FEC’s decision.

“But it’s head-scratching that the mastermind of this criminal enterprise, Donald Trump, has...

Roll Call: FEC reviewing rules on salaries, benefits for candidates

“The rules really have been stacked against working people running for office or people who might have been caregivers or those in between employment,” said Stephen Spaulding, senior counsel for public policy and government affairs at Common Cause. “If you were unemployed, a care-taker and your income was zero, you’re not entitled to a salary.”

Salon: GOP using new laws to drive out local Democratic election officials — and not just in Georgia

"What's driving these efforts is anti-democratic sentiment," Sylvia Albert, executive director of the nonprofit good government group Common Cause, said in an interview with Salon. "These individuals attempted to overturn an election and they were unable to do so. So they are now attempting to change the rules so that next time they can overturn the will of the people."

Depending on the state, "these individuals might now have the power to close polling stations or limit voting machine access," Albert warned. "This is part and...

Philadelphia Inquirer: The political rhetoric over Pa. Republicans’ election bill obscures the truth: It’s complicated

“It’s complex, but it’s a smart, strategic bill,” said Khalif Ali, the head of Common Cause Pennsylvania, a good-government advocacy group opposed to the legislation. “It’s definitely the wolf in sheep’s clothing. There are some decent pieces in there that we can’t say honestly … that we would be against.”
Ali spoke approvingly of increased poll worker pay and changes that would allow processing of mail ballots before Election Day — something elections officials have long requested and that could have prevented...

DOJ Challenges Georgia Attacks on the Freedom to Vote

Today, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a federal lawsuit against the state of Georgia challenging voting restrictions enacted since the 2020 election that federal authorities allege discriminate against Black Americans.

The suit challenges Georgia’s so-called “Election Integrity Act,” which was passed in March by the Republican majority in the state legislature and signed into law by Gov. Brian Kemp. The law imposes new limits on the use of absentee ballots, gives the legislature greater control over elections in the...

ABC News: Threats, pressures faced by poll workers pose ‘existential threat to our democracy,’ experts warn

"These election workers are feeling the brunt of former President Trump and various Republican allies lying about the election," said Sylvia Albert, voting and elections director for the government watchdog group Common Cause. "All of a sudden, these election workers are part of some vast conspiracy."

Albert says that what election officials have described represents "a level of threat and intimidation against election officials that you just don't see in a democracy."

"We're seeing election officials receive...

50 Senators Vote to Advance Boldest Democracy Package in Nearly 50 Years, But Republican Senators Block It with a Filibuster and Refuse to Even Allow a Debate

Tonight, there were no surprises in the opening act of the push to pass the For the People Act in the United States Senate. But grassroots momentum continues to build in a fight that will go on all summer as we continue to make the case to the American people and their representatives in Washington that this legislation must be passed to expand the freedom to vote, break the grip of big money in politics, end gerrymandering, and crack down on corruption.
