Common Cause Urges House Members to Support Criminal Contempt Charges for Navarro & Scavino for Ignoring Congressional  Subpoenas

Today, Common Cause urged every member of the U.S. House of Representatives to vote “yes” on the resolution to certify criminal contempt citations against former Trump Administration officials Peter Navarro and Dan Scavino for refusing to comply with subpoenas related to their roles in, and knowledge of, the January 6th insurrection at the United States Capitol. The brazen attempt to overturn the 2020 election resulted in multiple deaths and left hundreds seriously injured. The letter emphasizes that the House Select Committee investigating the insurrection referred the criminal contempt charges to the full House in a unanimous, bipartisan vote. The letter also notes that Common Cause plans to key-vote this legislation in our Democracy Scorecard, which we send to our 1.5 million members.

“Americans expect and deserve to learn the full truth about the January 6th insurrection when a violent, racist mob stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election,” Common Cause president Karen Hobert Flynn said. “People died that day, and scores were left with serious injuries because of the Trump Administration’s efforts to stage what amounted to a coup attempt after Donald Trump lost the 2020 election. If any Administration official will not comply with Congressional subpoenas, then Congress must find them in contempt and see that they are prosecuted accordingly. It is imperative that the American people are told the truth about the bloody insurrection, and Peter Navarro and Dan Scavino are withholding intimate knowledge of the actions of former president Trump and his inner circle before, during, and after the attack on the Capitol.”

The full House is expected to vote on the criminal contempt resolution later this week. Following passage of the resolution by the full chamber, it would be referred to the Department of Justice.
