Election Modernization Coalition Statement on Same-Day Registration

The bill that’s coming to the floor only got to the red zone, because a key provision – Same-Day Voter Registration – was dropped in Committee. To score a touchdown for the people of the Commonwealth, legislators need to support an amendment that puts same day registration back into the bill.

The Election Modernization Coalition is grateful to the leadership of the Massachusetts House of Representatives for scheduling a vote on the VOTES Act for Thursday, Jan 27. However, the bill that’s coming to the floor only got to the red zone, because a key provision – Same-Day Voter Registration – was dropped in Committee.

To score a touchdown for the people of the Commonwealth, legislators need to support an amendment that puts same day registration back into the bill. In order to increase equity in voting access, especially for low-income voters and people of color, and catch up with 20 other states, members of the House should not fumble this opportunity to establish Same-Day Voter Registration in MA.
