Listen to the People: Pass Democracy Reforms This Month

After delaying passage of multiple democracy and transparency reforms, Common Cause Michigan is calling for lawmakers to pass these reforms immediately.

For six days over the next two weeks, both the Michigan House and Senate will be in session. After delaying passage of multiple democracy and transparency reforms, Common Cause Michigan is calling for lawmakers to pass these reforms immediately.

The following bills need to be acted upon immediately:

Michigan Voting Rights Act (SB 401-404), which would enact state level protections for voters of color as the federal Voting Rights Act has been eroded. It is currently on the Senate floor awaiting action. The Senate should pass it before Sept. 17 to allow for the House to take it up and pass it ASAP.

National Popular Vote (HB 4156/4440), which would allow all voters to feel heard by making sure Michigan’s electoral college votes are awarded to the winner with the most individual voters nationally. This is currently on the House floor awaiting action. The House should pass it so the Senate can pass it ASAP.

BRITE Act transparency bills (HB 5583-5586) – which would end the lawmaker to lobbyist pipeline, tightening disclosure and lobbying laws, as well as other reforms.

“There is no better time than now to pass important democracy and transparency reforms that have been awaiting action in the legislature. The people of Michigan are calling for these reforms and they are watching. There is no reason why legislators should let another month pass without passing Michigan Voting Rights Act, National Popular Vote and the BRITE Act,” said Quentin Turner, Common Cause Michigan Executive Director.

Michigan voters wanted options. We should use them.

Through multiple reforms, we have fought hard to make voting more accessible to more Michiganders. Please use these new options to have your voice heard before or on August 6.
