Redistricting Proposal Centers Politicians Over People, Must Be Rejected

Common Cause Minnesota, a leader in independent redistricting reforms, is calling on legislators to stop HF550/SF824 because it is a bad redistricting bill that does not change who controls the drawing the maps.

Common Cause Minnesota, a leader in independent redistricting reforms, is calling on legislators to stop HF550/SF824 because it is a bad redistricting bill that does not change who controls the drawing the maps.

Under HF550/ SF824, the partisan leaders of the legislature would each pick two members of a redistricting commission to draw new maps. The only exclusions to who would be on the commission would be current elected officials or “public” officials and their family members.

“These proposals will continue the partisan-led chaos we saw at the Capitol so far this year. We cannot allow partisan interests like party chairs, lobbyists, and those who center their own power, remain in charge of who draws our district lines. We need a people centered process, where more than just who can win the next elections is considered, and Minnesotans’ interests are put first,” said Annastacia Belladonna-Carrera, executive director of Common Cause Minnesota.
