Defending Nebraska’s Unique legislature

Nebraska's nonpartisan, unicameral is unlike any other. Preserving this unique system requires ongoing commitment from Nebraskans who value pragmatic governance, collaborative problem-solving, and a legislative approach that puts substantive policy ahead of political tribalism.

Nebraska stands alone in the United States with its revolutionary approach to state governance: the nation’s only nonpartisan, single-chamber legislature. This distinctive system, established in 1937, represents a bold experiment in democratic innovation that continues to challenge traditional political structures.

Our unicameral legislature isn’t just a structural oddity—it’s a testament to efficiency, transparency, and genuine public representation. By eliminating the traditional two-chamber system, Nebraska has created a more streamlined, cost-effective governing body where 49 senators work collaboratively across philosophical divides. Party labels are intentionally set aside, allowing legislators to focus on substantive policy solutions rather than partisan posturing.

The unicameral model reduces bureaucratic complexity, cuts legislative costs, and promotes more direct dialogue between elected representatives and constituents. Senators are elected on a nonpartisan ballot, which means they campaign based on individual merit and local priorities rather than strict party platforms.

Preserving this unique system requires ongoing commitment from Nebraskans who value pragmatic governance, collaborative problem-solving, and a legislative approach that puts substantive policy ahead of political tribalism.
