Lawsuit Challenges Enforcement of Opinion Stripping Voting Rights from 50,000+ Nebraskans

Common Cause Nebraska supports those who are suing to ensure those who have served their time are allowed the fundamental right to vote.

The following is a statement from Common Cause Nebraska Executive Director Gavin Geis on a lawsuit filed today against the Nebraska Secretary of State and county elections officials in Hall and Douglas counties to force them to comply with LB20, a law that ends the two-year waiting period for Nebraskans to regain their voting rights that Common Cause Nebraska worked with allies to pass.

The recent actions of the Attorney General and Secretary of State are shameful power grabs that do not respect the will of voters or their elected legislators. Common Cause Nebraska supports those who are suing to ensure those who have served their time are allowed the fundamental right to vote, as legislators overwhelmingly voted to restore this legislative session. We hope voting rights can be restored to the 50,000 plus Nebraskans who had their rights stripped away as soon as possible,” said Gavin Geis, Common Cause Nebraska Executive Director.
