Preserving Nebraska’s Electoral College Advantage

Nebraska’s method of splitting electoral votes by congressional district does a better job of representing our state’s character and voters than a return to winner-take-all ever could.

Nebraska stands apart from nearly every other state in how we allocate presidential electoral votes!

Our unique system that splits electoral votes based on congressional district results has some major upsides:

  • It encourages presidential candidates to engage Nebraskans because our votes are truly up for grabs.  Similar states rarely see this kind of attention.
  • The voices and concerns of Nebraskans are elevated on the national stage, as candidates seek to win our votes.
  • It brings in spending on media and events that help bolster the local economy.
  • It Gives weight to minority voter voices in each district and preventing the marginalization of voters who don’t align with the majority.

While most award all of their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the popular vote, Nebraska uses a district method that more accurately reflects the diverse political landscape of our state.

By championing this approach, Nebraska demonstrates that there are alternative, more representative ways to conduct presidential elections.

By allowing each congressional district to cast an electoral vote for the candidate of their choice, our current system gives meaning to more of our votes.

And it encourages presidential candidates to work harder for Nebraskans’ votes. With candidates ignoring most neighboring Midwest states in favor of battlegrounds,...
