Our Impact
Common Cause has been fighting for and winning key democracy reforms since our founding in 1970. Established in 1973, our Common Cause New Mexico office removes barriers to civic participation for a more reflective government. From better access to the ballot box, to campaign finance and ethics reforms, New Mexicans can count on Common Cause to make a meaningful difference.
When Common Cause New Mexico takes action, we make a difference for democracy.
With the support of our dedicated members, we have shown up time and time again to protect the rights of New Mexicans. We will continue to make our government here in New Mexico more open, honest, and accountable. Check out some of our most impactful victories:
Improving Our Elections
In 2023, the New Mexico Voting Rights Act, which includes the Native American Voting Rights Act, was signed into law after a hard-fought campaign by Common Cause New Mexico and our partner organizations. These reforms will protect our frontline election workers, help ensure accurate voter rolls, improve election security and accessibility, and provide more protections for voters. We will continue to push for measures that improve the electoral process in our state.
Mobilizing Election Protection Volunteers
Each election year, Common Cause New Mexico mobilizes nonpartisan volunteers across the state to serve as a first line of defense for voters. These volunteers answer voters’ questions at their polling places, make sure that voters know their rights, and report any attempts to intimidate or obstruct voters. This program has helped countless New Mexicans make themselves heard at the ballot box.
