Common Cause/NY Calls to Consolidate Brooklyn Special Election w/ June 23rd Primaries for Legislature and Congress

"We applaud Governor Cuomo for taking swift action to lower the petition signature requirement for candidates in New York. However, there is some confusion over whether or not those same requirements apply to the special election race in NYC Council District 37 scheduled for April 28..."

Urges a uniform reduction in petitioning requirements for all candidates in April and June elections

NEW YORK, NY — In response to ongoing concerns about the signature requirement to make the ballot for the special election in NYC Council District 37, Susan Lerner, Executive Director of Common Cause/NY issued the following statement:

“We applaud Governor Cuomo for taking swift action to lower the petition signature requirement for candidates in New York. However, there is some confusion over whether or not those same requirements apply to the special election race in NYC Council District 37 scheduled for April 28. The reduction in signature requirement should apply uniformly and clarification should be shared with all impacted candidates immediately. We’ve also already called on the Governor to consolidate the presidential primary with the June 23rd elections, and now urge the Mayor to do the same for the special. No one should be putting their lives, or others, at risk by campaigning in person right now.”

On Monday, Common Cause/NY called to consolidate April primaries to June 23rd. See full statement here.
