NCCU students march to the polls for Durham’s election
Led by the school’s Sound Machine Marching Band, students at NC Central University on Tuesday walked together to the polls to vote early in Durham’s local election.
“At North Carolina Central University, we are one of the last HBCUs in the south with an on-campus voting precinct,” said Imani Johnson, political action & civic engagement chair with the NCCU Student Government Association. “So I wanted to make sure our students know this, and make sure we use this poll, so we don’t lose it.”
Organized by the NCCU Student Government Association, Common Cause NC and Campus Election Engagement Project, the march followed a route from the Alfonso Elder Student Union to the early voting site located on campus at the Turner Law Building.
“When I go vote, I’m not just voting for me. I’m voting for future generations to come,” said Kinaya Marshall, a student at NC Central University.
Early voting runs through Nov. 1 for Durham. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5. Information on the election can be found in the 2019 Durham Voter Guide, presented by Common Cause NC.
