Common Cause NC applauds Gov. Cooper for vetoing voter ID bill

RALEIGH – Today Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed a voter ID proposal (Senate Bill 824) passed during the legislature’s lame-duck session last week.  The following is a statement from Bob Phillips, executive director of Common Cause NC.

“We applaud Governor Cooper for vetoing this deeply troubling voter ID bill. Not only was this voter ID proposal pushed through by a lame-duck legislature without proper public input, but the measure fails to fully protect eligible voters in North Carolina.  Make no mistake, this voter ID bill would have a negative effect on eligible voters, with a disproportionate impact on senior citizens, students and voters of color. We call upon the lame-duck legislature to respect the governor’s veto and allow the duly elected new legislative body to thoughtfully address this issue during the regular session next year.”
