Democracy Priorities in Oregon’s 83rd Legislative Assembly
Common Cause Oregon commits to safeguarding democracy at the state level
SALEM, Ore. — This week marks the start of a new presidential administration and a new legislative session in Oregon. Honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., Common Cause reflects on the state of democracy and priorities for the work ahead.
Statement of Common Cause Oregon’s Executive Director, Kate Titus:
“As we launch into Oregon’s 2025 state legislative session and the nation’s next presidential administration, Common Cause Oregon remains committed to democracy. Martin Luther King Jr. taught us that democracy is not a state — it is an act. We must continue to act collectively to keep democracy alive and to realize its full promise.
This year, we’ll be pushing back against an emerging autocratic vision for America — one that differs sharply from Dr. King’s vision. Common Cause Oregon will continue our work as a trusted nonpartisan voice, standing strong for democracy.
We’ll bring collective Oregon power to the federal fights ahead and toward protecting our state from potential federal or judicial threats. We’ll watchdog the state legislative session with a democracy lens. We’ll secure and fully implement the big new campaign finance reforms we’ve won that put power back into the hands of everyday Oregonians. We’ll back youth leaders in their call for a right to vote on the school board issues that impact them, and those fighting for their right to vote while incarcerated, and continue to advance equitable access to the ballot.
Democracy is ours to enact.”
