Just hours after an investigation exposed "irregularities" in rent payments for Cranston Mayor Allan Fung's campaign headquarters, his fellow candidates for governor fired at him, decrying Fung's actions.

Hailed by many as among the strongest Ethics Codes and Commissions in the nation, the Rhode Island Ethics Commission itself is violating its own code, with nearly half the commission members serving beyond the expiration of their five-year-terms, with one member exceeding his term by 15 years.

Gov. Gina Raimondo and Cranston Mayor Allan Fung, the Democratic and Republican front-runners in the R.I. governor’s race, have so far passed on invitations to debate their opponents before the Sept. 12 primary, marking a major departure from prior campaigns, when candidates hit the stage repeatedly.

Political candidates filed quarterly reports Tuesday. The reports will show how much money they’ve raised and also be an indication of the strength of their campaigns.
