Automatic Voter Registration
By switching voter registration from an opt-in to an opt-out system, AVR makes our elections more inclusive, as well as more accurate and secure.
In 2017, Rhode Island became the sixth state to adopt Automatic Voter Registration. This system automatically registers eligible citizens to vote, or updates their registration, unless they choose to opt-out. It brings more people into our democracy and keeps the voter rolls more up-to-date. Currently Automatic Voter Registration occurs at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Common Cause Rhode Island supports expanding to other state agencies.
