Spring 2025 Internship Positions

Maryland Legislative Intern

LOCATION: Internship is hybrid with travel to Annapolis expected 1-2 times a week.

Start Date: February 17, 2025

Reports to: Maryland Executive Director

Details: This is a part-time internship (40 hours/pay period), starting February 17 and ending April 30.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Learn how Maryland governance works and how you can influence the legislative process this session as an intern in Annapolis!

Common Cause Maryland is seeking a Legislative Intern to assist with research, advocacy, policy development, outreach, and engagement during the 2025 legislative session. Individuals with keen interest in government affairs and the legislative process, a can-do attitude, and a commitment to building a fair, inclusive, and transparent democracy are highly encouraged to apply.

Skills you will build and work you will be involved in :

  •  Assist with bill tracking, research and analysis of legislation, and drafting written testimony. Help produce public education materials, including one-pagers and factsheets.
  • Support ongoing redistricting and fair elections campaigns, specifically helping to monitor legislative redistricting and small donor public financing programs currently in use at the local level
  • Assist with implementing grassroots strategy in support of priority legislation utilizing social media, communication through email and text action alerts, and direct outreach to members and supporters.
  • Help coordinate meetings with elected officials, coalition partners, and members of the public. Assist with coalition management.
  • Provide additional administrative assistance when needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

You will be a good fit for this internship if you are:

  • committed to advancing race equity
  • passionate about good government issues
  • self-motivated and able to work independently
  • An excellent writer, researcher, and editor
  •  familiar with Microsoft Office and social media platforms
  • able to work cooperatively with a diverse range of community partners

DEADLINE: Interviews will start January 2.

Compensation: $3,500 for the 11 weeks paid in 5 equal twice monthly payments on the 15th and last day of the month.

Classification: This position is classified as temporary and therefore not included in the union-represented collective bargaining unit.

Nebraska Government Data Analysis Intern

Essential functions: Common Cause (NE) is seeking a Government Data Analysis Intern. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of public government datasets and data analysis techniques. Work will include campaign finance and campaign donation research, while growing your skillset and knowledge of government affairs. This is a chance to learn and grow at a non-partisan grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy.

Skills you will build and work you will be involved in

  • Developing and utilizing dataset analysis tools to better understand the impact of money in Nebraska’s political systems.
  • Aid in the ground-up development of digital tools to analyze government datasets related to campaign finance, lobbying activity, and elections.

    Qualifications

    You will be a good fit for this internship if you have:

    • An interest in data analysis, including using digital tools and computer programming to assess information.
    • A working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
    • A passion for learning about elections, government affairs, and the legislative process.
    • A desire and an ability to work in a non-partisan manner
    • A willingness to build your organizational skills and attention to detail
    • A willingness to build your writing and listening skills
    • A willingness to learn new skills
