Letter to Lawmakers on Voting in a Pandemic
The State Office of Elections and County Clerks by Proclamation dated May 15, 2020 stated that Hawaii’s first all vote-by-mail elections – during a public health crisis no less – will only have eight Voter Service Centers statewide to conduct in-person voting, same day register voters, collect voted ballots, and more, such as respond to the confusion, mistakes, mishaps, and countless questions that vote-by-mail's launch will inevitably bring. These eight Voter Service Centers will only be open 10 days prior to elections from 8 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Saturday and on election days from 7 am to 7 pm. Clearly, eight Voter Service Centers statewide will not be sufficient.

ABC News: Election officials gear up for single biggest day of voting during coronavirus, as Trump rails against vote by mail
Suzanne Almeida, the interim executive director for Common Cause Pennsylvania, a voting rights organization, told ABC that for officials in Pennsylvania, "this was never going to be an easy election." "Pennsylvania in 2020 was always going to be crazy. It's a swing state in the presidential election year. And then on top of that, in 2019 we passed historic voting reform that gave us vote-by-mail for the first time, and changed the voter registration deadline closer to election day," Almeida said.

Associated Press: Democrats try again with sweeping mail voting requirements
Democrats and voting rights groups contend they simply want to protect the voting rights of all citizens, and note that repeated studies have found no widespread fraud and no partisan benefit to expanded voting. “It’s an uninformed political calculation that certain elected Republican officials are making,” said Aaron Scherb of Common Cause.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Voting Rights Groups Call for Urgent Action on HD 5075, a Bill Supported by Over 100 Organizations to Safeguard Fall Elections
“We support this bill because it is based on evidence and best practices from other states,” says Pam Wilmot of Common Cause Massachusetts. “It is comprehensive, and includes reforms that consider the needs of voters, but also of local elections officials who no matter what happens will be faced with a surge of absentee ballots and very different elections than in years past. One clear lesson learned from other states is that the necessary reforms will take all the time we have to implement, which is why we urge the Joint Committee on Election Laws to act quickly to move this critical bill.”

MASSLIVE: Massachusetts officials want more voting options during coronavirus pandemic, but can't agree on execution
“Regardless of what we do, we’re going to see an increase of absentee balloting from the current rate of 3 to 5 percent to 70, 60, 80, 90 percent,” said Pam Wilmot, executive director of Common Cause Massachusetts, which supports universal vote-by-mail. “When you add on the request process, it’s astronomical.”
