Arizona taxpayers are on the hook for millions. Now, using emergency powers, Governor Abbott has got Texas taxpayers on the hook for $4 million more.

Today, Governor Greg Abbott signed racially and partisan gerrymandered district maps for Texas House of Representatives, Texas Senate, the State Board of Education, and Congress into law. The maps, designed to deny voters fair representation and equal say in government, will determine the outcome of the state’s elections for the next decade.

Today, the Senate passed SB 47, a bill authorizing political party chairs to demand reviews of the 2020 election and future elections. The bill was first filed on Friday, and a public hearing was held yesterday.

Today, SB 9, a bill designed to intimidate and discourage Texans from exercising their freedom to vote was introduced in the Texas State Senate. The legislation is being heard after Governor Abbott requested that the legislature take up the bill, without citing any facts or reputable sources to support his claims.

The Texas Senate State Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on SB 47, a bill authorizing political party chairs to demand reviews of the 2020 election. The bill also authorizes political party chairs to demand reviews of future elections, and elevate those reviews to the Secretary of State for further review, with counties paying the entire cost of the processes.

When district maps are drawn by the politicians, they will benefit the politicians. And that’s exactly what these draft maps represent—prioritizing the politicians in power over the voters of Texas. Instead of ensuring that every Texan has a voice in our government, state legislators have drawn maps to help those in power win their next election.
