Attorney General Attempts to Prevent Texans from Registering in Travis and Bexar Counties

"With about four weeks left before the voter registration deadline, Ken Paxton is attempting to use his office to deter local governments from simply trying to get more people registered," said Anthony Gutierrez, executive director of Common Cause Texas.

AUSTIN- Attorney General Ken Paxton recently announced that he is suing Travis and Bexar counties in an attempt to block voter registration efforts. His office also threatened to sue Harris County for the same reason.

In response to the lawsuits, Anthony Gutierrez, executive director of Common Cause Texas issued the following statement:

“With about four weeks left before the voter registration deadline, Ken Paxton is attempting to use his office to deter local governments from simply trying to get more people registered.

“Texas already has the most antiquated and cumbersome voter registration system in the country. In the vast majority of other states, eligible voters are able to register later than 30 days before Election Day and they’re able to register online.

“This is yet another attempt by Ken Paxton to attempt to limit electoral participation by erecting obstacles between Texans and the ballot box.

“Our hope is that this news serves to remind people that they need to make sure and get registered by October 7 so they can participate in this historic election.”
