DISAPPOINTMENT: High court ruling bans same day registration and out of precinct voting

The U.S. Supreme Court has reversed a federal court ruling which would have allowed same day voter registration and out of precinct provisional voting in North Carolina for the November elections.

The U.S. Supreme Court has reversed a federal court ruling which would have allowed same day voter registration and out of precinct provisional voting in North Carolina for the November elections.

The High Court’s decision means eligible voters will not be able to register for this election and out of precinct provisional ballots will not be counted.

“It’s a disappointing decision but not a surprise,” said Bob Phillips, executive director of Common Cause North Carolina. “We will continue to contest in court these laws passed by the legislature that will make voter harder for everyone.  The right to easy and accessible voting is fundamental to a healthy democracy.”

Common Cause is a plaintiff in the voting rights lawsuit that is scheduled for July 2015
