Happy Thursday. How about that State of the Union address?

Thursday, March 6, 2025

👋 Hi Friend! Happy Thursday. How about that State of the Union address?

Welcome to The People’s Bi-Weekly Watchdog Newsletter, delivered to your inbox every Thursday. We bring you the news you need to know to hold power accountable from the nonpartisan source you can trust.

This week’s Common Cause newsletter is just a 5 minute read at 692 words.

👋 SOTU 2025: The Days of Rule by Unelected Bureaucrats Are(n’t) Over

On Tuesday, in Donald Trump’s first address to a joint session of Congress in his second term, he declared, “The days of rule by unelected bureaucrats are over.” The irony? Elon Musk was sitting right there in the room.

We’re calling out this hypocrisy with a new billboard in New York City’s Times Square, demanding Trump put the American people first and immediately fire Elon Musk.

No one voted for Musk—Democrats didn’t, and neither did Republicans. Yet, his name is everywhere because his companies rake in billions of taxpayer dollars. From firing over 6,000 veterans, cuts to our kids’ education, and so much more – Elon is wreaking havoc on the American people. If we’re serious about holding power accountable, it’s time to ask: why are we still funding him? #FireElonMusk

🗳️ The SAVE Act: Making it Harder to Vote Again

Republicans in Congress continue to push the SAVE Act, a bill designed to make it harder to vote for millions of American citizens. While they have delayed voting on it for a few weeks, we know it’s just a matter of time before it hits the U.S. House floor. Check out this video from Aaron Sherb that explains why this bill is so bad for voting rights. And if you’re in a state like Michigan that is pushing their own anti-voter bill, we need you to get involved.

Still Marching On: Sixty Years After Selma

Sixty years after the courageous march for voting rights in Selma, the fight for democracy continues. The annual Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee isn’t just a commemoration—it’s a call to action. As we honor the brave souls who stood against injustice on “Bloody Sunday,” we’re reminded that the struggle for fair and equal representation is far from over.

Aligned with Common Cause’s mission to build a democracy that works for everyone, this milestone is a chance to renew our commitment to voting rights and holding power accountable. The 60th Jubilee is more than a remembrance—it’s a rallying point for all who believe in justice and democracy.
