WASHINGTON, D.C. –  With increased public scrutiny of the security, accessibility, fairness, and overall integrity of voting and elections as we approach 2020, Sylvia Albert joins Common Cause as its National Director of Voting & Elections. Albert brings more than a decade of professional experience in public interest law and public policy campaigns expanding ballot access, reducing barriers to participation, and combating voter intimidation among historically disenfranchised communities. She has also done extensive work on fair housing issues serving as a program analyst and an advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity in the Obama Administration.

“Sylvia Albert’s career is about doing the hard work of bringing fairness, access, and opportunity to our politics and government, especially to historically disadvantaged communities,” said Karen Hobert Flynn, president of Common Cause. “We’re thrilled Sylvia is bringing that experience to lead Common Cause’s programs ensuring all eligible voters have an equal voice and vote in elections that are fair and free from intimidation and outside influence.”.

“Common Cause is an innovator on the leading edge of democracy reform strengthening the people’s voice in government,” Sylvia Albert said. “The fight to make certain every voter’s voice is heard is hard-fought every day, not just during election years. It’s an honor to be part of the expert team at Common Cause fighting every day to make sure we all have a say in the future for our family, community, and nation.”

Albert was the National Campaign Manager for All Voting is Local at the Leadership Conference where she focused on law and public policy impacting every aspect of the voting process. She provided pro bono legal support to Project Vote, analyzing the impacts of noncompliance with the National Voter Registration Act. She also worked at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law.

Albert is a graduate of Georgetown Law and the University of California at Berkeley.
